What Is Molipaxin Used For?

Molipaxin is one of a group of medicines called anti-depressants. It is used to make you feel less depressed and less anxious.

Before You Take Your Medicine

If you can answer yes to any of the following questions, you must tell your doctor before taking this medicine:

  • Are you pregnant or trying to become pregnant?

  • Are you breast feeding?

  • Do you have epilepsy?

  • Do you have liver or kidney disease?

  • Do you have heart disease?

  • Are you allergic to any of the ingredients?

What About Other Medicines?

Some other medicines and Molipaxin may interfere with each other, such as:

  • muscle relaxants and inhaled anaesthetics

  • other anti-depressants including MAOIs and sedatives

  • medicines used to treat epilepsy (e.g. carbamazepine)

  • medicines used to treat high blood pressure or heart disease

  • medicines used to treat fungal infections

  • some medicines used to treat HIV

  • Erythromycin ( a type of antibiotic)

Your doctor will know about these.

Remember to mention to your doctor all the medicines you are taking and those you have taken recently, including those you have bought without a prescription.

What About Alcohol?

It is best to avoid alcohol while taking Molipaxin.

Driving And Molipaxin

Molipaxin can make you drowsy. Care must be taken when driving or operating machinery.

How Should You Take Your Tablets?

Always take the number of tablets your doctor has told you to take.

Depression

You will usually start by taking, by mouth, one tablet of Molipaxin 150mg a day. Your doctor may afterwards decide to increase your dose to two tablets a day.

Your doctor may want you to take your tablets either in divided doses after food, or as a single dose as you go to bed.

In hospitals, higher doses may be prescribed to some patients. The daily dose will not usually be more than four tablets and should be divided throughout the day.

Elderly or frail people may need to start with a daily dose of 100mg. You should follow the advice of your doctor to achieve this dose. If necessary, the doctor may further increase this dose up to 300mg a day.

Anxiety

The dose may vary from half a tablet to two tablets a day.

Doctors may sometimes prescribe different doses. Make sure that you know how many tablets your doctor has prescribed and do not take any more than this.

Molipaxin should not be given to children.

How Long Should You Take Your Medicine?

You should take your tablets of Molipaxin for as long as your doctor has told you. Do not stop taking your tablets without your doctor knowing even if you feel better. The tablets may need to be taken for a number of weeks or months.
When your doctor tells you to stop taking Molipaxin, it is usual to do so gradually.

What If You Take Too Many Tablets?

If you take too many tablets, you should immediately contact your nearest Hospital Casualty Department.

What If You Forget To Take A Tablet?

The special calendar pack will help you to remember if you have taken your tablets. If you forget a dose, don't worry. Leave that dose in the strip and when it is time for your next dose carry on as usual. Do not take extra tablets to make up.

What About Side Effects?

Most people can take Molipaxin without any problems. Side effects that have been reported are:

  • drowsiness - this should wear off as you continue to take the tablets

  • headache, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, feeling less alert, irritability, agitation or fits

  • sweating, unexplained fever or shivering

  • nausea and vomiting

  • constipation or diarrhoea

  • dry mouth and blurred vision

  • weakness

  • weight loss

  • slow or racing pulse

  • changes in your blood pressure

  • unexpected swelling (fluid retention)

  • restlessness or difficulty sleeping

  • skin rashes

  • any uncontrolled body movements, including tremor, twitching, spasms, muscle rigidity and an inability to sit still

Some men have experienced long-lasting and painful erections with Molipaxin. If this happens to you, it is important that you stop taking Molipaxin and tell your doctor immediately.

Rarely, jaundice or other abnormalities of liver function may occur. Rarely, anaemia, a low white cell count (the blood cells that fight infection) and low platelet count (the blood cells which help the blood clot) may occur.

If you think you are reacting badly to the tablets in any way, consult your doctor or your pharmacist.
