About Minims Fluorescein


The name of this product is Minims Fluorescein Sodium. Each Minims unit is a sterile, single-use eye drop containing 1% or 2% w/v fluorescein sodium solution. It also contains purified water. Each Minims unit contains approximately 0.5ml of solution. Each carton contains 20 units. Fluorescein is a stain which helps the doctor or eye specialist to examine your eye.

What is it for?


Minims Fluorescein is used to help the doctor or eye specialist examine your eye. Scratches on the conjunctiva (the lining of the inside of the eyelids and part of the eye) are stained yellow or orange. Damage to the cornea (the transparent membrane covering the surface of the eye) is stained green. Any foreign bodies which are stuck in your eye will be surrounded by a green ring.


This product can also be used to help your doctor or eye specialist perform a test called Goldmann Tonometry (a way of measuring the pressure inside your eye), or to help in the fitting of hard contact lenses.




Before using Minims Fluorescein


This product should not be used when soft contact lenses are being worn.


You may find that your vision is blurred for a short time after using this product. Do not try to drive until you are sure that your vision has returned to normal.


If you are pregnant you should tell the doctor or eye specialist. It is possible that Minims Fluorescein will still be used, but it is also possible that an alternative may be given.




Using Minims Fluorescein


The doctor or eye specialist will put the drops in your eye for you. Enough solution will be used to make sure that any damaged areas will be stained. A sterile eyewash may be used to wash away any excess solution.



The Minims unit should be thrown away after use.




After using Minims Fluorescein


Following Minims Fluorescein administration your vision may become a little blurred when the drops are first added. Your vision may become a little blurred when the drops are first added. This will wear off within a few minutes. Occasionally, the skin near the corner of your eye may become stained by solution which has run out of the corner of your eye. This will wear off after a few days, sentence. Other possible side effects which are very rare, include redness and irriation of the eye, rarely difficulty in breathing and symptoms of shock and itchy skin rash with raised red blotches. If you do experience any unpleasant effects after using Minims Fluorescein, tell your doctor or eye specialist.




Storing Minims Fluorescein


  • Minims Fluorescein should be stored below 25°C. Do not freeze. Store in the original container in order to protect from light. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

  • The expiry date is printed on each Minims unit overwrap and on the carton label. Do not use it after this date.
