About Minims Atropine Sulphate
The name of this product is Minims Atropine Sulphate 1%. Each Minims eye drops unit contains 1% w/v atropine sulphate solution. It also contains purified water and hydrochloric acid. Each individual unit is a sterile, single-use container, which holds approximately 0.5ml solution. Each carton contains 20 units. Atropine is a mydriatic and cycloplegic drug used to enlarge the pupil of the eye and to temporarily paralyse the muscles of the eye which help your eyes to focus.

What is it for?
Minims Atropine Sulphate is used to enlarge the pupil of your eye. This may be to allow a doctor or eye specialist to examine your eye closely, or it may be part of a treatment programme. In addition, temporarily paralysing the eye can help to reduce the pain felt by subjects who have certain eye conditions.
Before using Minims Atropine Sulphate?
You should not use this eye drop if you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed in the section "About Minims Atropine Sulphate" above.
Atropine should not be used in eyes which are likely to develop increased internal pressure when the pupil becomes enlarged. Your doctor or eye specialist will check to make sure that this problem does not affect you. If you are pregnant (or think you might be) or if you are breast feeding you should tell the doctor or eye specialist before using Minims Atropine Sulphate. It is still possible that you will receive this eye drop but it is also possible that a different one may be used.
After putting the eye drops in your eye, you may find that your eyesight becomes blurred for a short time. You must not drive or operate machinery until your eyesight has returned to normal.
Using Minims Atropine Sulphate
The normal adult dose is one drop in each eye. Your doctor or eye specialist will normally put the drops in your eye for you but if you are putting in your own drops then follow these instructions carefully.
- 1. Wash your hands thoroughly, peel the overwrap apart and take out the Minims unit.
- 2. Twist off the cap.
- 3. Look upwards and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
- 4. Hold the Minims unit just above your eye and gently squeeze until a drop of liquid falls into the gap between your eyeball and lower eyelid. Make sure the dropper does not touch any part of your eye.
- 5. Release the lower eyelid and then press gently on the inner corner of your eye for a minute or so. This will help stop the solution draining into your nose and throat. This is especially advisable in children.
- 6. Throw away the rest of the Minims unit when you have finished even if there is some solution left.
It is very unlikely that you will suffer an overdose after using this product. If you do suddenly feel unwell, however, you should contact your doctor or the nearest casualty department immediately.
If you forget to take a dose of Minims Atropine Sulphate, use it as soon as you remember then carry on taking it as before.
After using Minims Atropine Sulphate
You should not suffer from any unwanted side effects after using this eye drop, but occasionally one or more of the following can occur; a dry mouth, flushing of the skin, increased body temperature, constipation, difficulty in passing urine and a fast heart beat. You should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you suffer from any unusual effects even if they are not mentioned in this leaflet.
Storing your medicine
Keep out of reach and sight of children. Minims Atropine Sulphate should be stored below 25°C.
Do not freeze. Store in the original container to protect from light.
The expiry date is printed on each Minims unit overwrap and on the carton label. Do not use it after this date.
The Minims units should be thrown away after a single use, even if there is some solution left.
Remember, this medicine is only for you. Never give it to anybody else, even if their symptoms appear to be the same as yours.
